Our work endeavours to acknowledge, include, and honour Indigenous contributions, voices, and perspectives. 


Your day to make an impact

The HBC Heritage Intern will work as part of the Heritage team, researching and developing new content for the department’s website, company intranet, social media sites and HBC’s educational programs. The department is open to new ideas, perspectives and ways of sharing stories. The HBC Intern is encouraged to think outside the box in developing and leading an in-depth research or creative project that will evolve how we storytell to ensure full and accurate accounts of HBC’s history. Students with experience in oral history, photojournalism, and/or digital exhibits are encouraged to apply.

The HBC Heritage Intern may also support additional collections and programs as required. This may include supporting internal and external partners through research, content capture and creation, database maintenance, and collections management. 

As part of HBC’s commitment to evolve our historic narrative to accurately include Indigenous perspectives, the Heritage Intern must identify as an Indigenous person within Canada – First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Metis, or Inuit.


How will you strive

  • Working towards completing a post-secondary degree or diploma in an undergraduate or Master’s program in history, Indigenous studies, art history, journalism, museum studies, or a related field 
  • The ability to thrive in a team and collaborative setting, contribute and share ideas and work to ensure the success of the team
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across diverse organizations and teams
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with a desire to learn on the job in a rapidly changing environment
  • The ability to meet deadlines and produce high quality output
  • Knowledge of history and passion for storytelling
  • Developing content for digital communications (web, blogs, social media)
  • Working for a library, gallery, museum, or other cultural institution or association
  • Educational programming and public outreach
  • Use of Collections Database software (Inmagic DB/TextWorks preferred)
  • Conducting efficient and accurate historical research and reference services.
